NBC dropped from Merlin Olsen asbestos case

According to court documents, the attorneys in late football legend Merlin Olsen's asbestos case have decided to drop NBC as a defendant after an investigation reportedly revealed that the network was not responsible for exposing Olsen to the asbestos during his employment with NBC.

Developer jailed for willful violation of asbestos regulations

Earlier this week, a developer was sentenced to just under three years in federal prison for his role in a conspiracy to ignore and violate federal asbestos laws during a long-term renovation project at a major downtown building. The developer is accused of conspiring with some employees to remove and hide asbestos materials, while not informing other employees about the potential danger he was putting them in.

Widow files asbestos lawsuit against Illinois Central Railroad

Until a relatively recent time, asbestos and similar products were not known to be harmful to those that worked or lived with or near them. Therefore, there are a great many people in Illinois and throughout the country that are dealing with the effects of long-term exposure to asbestos. For many of the sick or injured, there is little their employer could have done to protect them, with the knowledge they had at the time. But does that mean that their employer should not be held responsible for the effects of asbestos exposure on their employees?

Leading or participating in a mesothelioma clinical trial

Although researchers have come a long way in developing and implementing treatments for mesothelioma, there is still much that is unknown about the disease and the best way to treat it. In the ongoing efforts to learn more about the asbestos cancer, many hospitals and physicians have established clinical studies, in which they test new treatments and medications for the disease.

Illinois building demolition creates potential asbestos exposure

What do you get when you combine two buildings, three business owners, a destructive fire, asbestos, a city, a mayor, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, an excavating company, the Illinois Attorney General's office, and a whole lot of confusion? So far, this combination has led to massive amounts of confusion, potential asbestos exposure, and a high likelihood of legal battles.

Study links asbestos exposure to ovarian cancer

The link between asbestos exposure and lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis is well-documented, having been proven both by medical tests and by the thousands of people who succumb to these debilitating diseases every year. For many years, researchers have been working to prove their theory that exposure to asbestos is linked to a greater risk for ovarian cancer.

Automaker bailouts leave Illinois asbestos victims without options

When the United States government bailed out U.S. car companies Chrysler and General Motors two years ago, the common justification thrown around was that the automakers were "too big to fail." Certainly, if the government had not intervened and the companies had gone bankrupt, several thousand Americans would have been out of work and the United States economy would have suffered greatly.

Study reveals more effective mesothelioma treatment method

A recent study has indicated that a new combination of less common mesothelioma treatment methods may more effectively increase the chances of survival of those who suffer from the deadly disease. According to researchers at the Raymond and Ruth Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, the new findings have the added bonus of reducing the need for surgical lung removal in mesothelioma patients, allowing patients to have more normal lives following their mesothelioma treatment while also removing some of the risk of surgery.

Tornado cleanup brings asbestos concerns

As the residents of the battered town of Joplin, Missouri, continue to clean up from the devastating tornado that struck the city last month, there may be a new hazard to worry about. With over 8,000 destroyed structures throughout the region, it is likely that many of the materials being cleaned up and hauled away contain asbestos or similar materials, potentially placing residents and cleanup crews in danger of asbestos exposure and at risk of mesothelioma, lung cancer, or related diseases.
