For many years, talcum powder (made from the mineral talc) has been used in popular health and beauty products such as Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower. These products were chosen by millions of people to keep skin dry and comfortable. In fact, many women used these products for feminine hygiene purposes — some of them for decades.
Sadly, however, evidence now suggests a link between talcum powder use and ovarian cancer, especially with long-term use.
Understanding The Problem
As early as 1971, baby powder was linked to ovarian cancer. The talc can make its way up into the reproductive system and cause chronic inflammation. Talc powders have been found in the ovaries of women who developed ovarian cancer.
Talcum powders contain talc, a mineral known for its softness and moisture-absorbent properties. Talc has similar properties to asbestos, a known carcinogen. In the 1970s, many baby powder brands actually contained asbestos. However, most manufacturers now claim that their powders no longer have asbestos — although it is possible that even asbestos-free talc can cause some forms of cancer.
Several studies conducted over the past few decades show the dangers of talcum powder use. For instance, women who use talcum powder in the genital area have a 33 percent higher risk of developing ovarian cancer.
Many women apply the powder directly to their skin or on a sanitary napkin or underwear. When talcum powders are used in the female genital area, they can enter the vagina and move into the uterus and ovaries, causing inflammation. Repeated long-term use of talcum powders can result in chronic inflammation, increasing the risk for ovarian cancer.
Approximately 20,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year. A jury recently awarded $72 million to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer linked to talcum powder use. If you believe that your diagnosis is related to talcum powder use and have questions about a possible talcum powder lawsuit, talk to a lawyer at The Gori Law Firm as soon as possible.
