Falsified records left some military families exposed to asbestos

On Behalf of | Jun 30, 2019 | Mesothelioma/Asbestos-Related Illness

Some military families living at Oklahoma’s Tinker Air Force Base may have been exposed to asbestos in their homes on the base. Because asbestos has a natural resistance to heat, fire and electricity, it was often added to building materials, such as tiles, adhesives, sealants, roofing felt and others. When those building materials become worn or damaged, asbestos particles can be released into the air.

The landlord falsified repair records for years

For some military families, the asbestos exposure may have been prolonged when Balfour Beatty Communities, the landlord for the base, did not complete repairs in a timely fashion. However, this prolonged exposure was kept under the radar for years.

A recent investigation found that Balfour Beatty Communities falsified the records they presented to the Air Force. Between 2014 and 2017, work orders were altered and incomplete work orders were closed out to make the company appear like it was promptly resolving tenant issues. This false responsiveness helped the company gain millions of dollars for admirable service, while military families continued to live in unsafe conditions.

Symptoms of exposure take decades to appear

Inhaling asbestos dust is dangerous because the asbestos fibers can become trapped in the body forever. This can cause scarring, genetic damage or aggressive forms of cancer to develop. Often, those who have been exposed to asbestos do not begin to show symptoms until decades later.

If someone’s dishonesty exposed your family to asbestos, it may be wise to explore your options. Appropriate legal action may help you afford the medical treatment needed for any asbestos-related conditions.
