USS Yuma

Commercial Iron Works built the USS Yuma, a Tug boat, in 1943. Constructed using asbestos as an insulater, many veterans and shipbuilders were exposed to the dangerous carcinogen.

USS Yuma (AT 94) – Navy Tug

Classification: Tug

Status: Disposed of through Navy Transfer

Fleet: 7th/5th

Launch Date: 7/17/1943
Commission Date: 8/31/1943
Decommission Date: 11/11/1955

The USS Yuma served in the Pacific during the Second World War, earning two battle stars for towing battle-damaged and kamikaze-crashed ships to safety. She also earned two battle stars for her service in the Korean War.

Tugs are vessels that are used to tow or maneuver larger vessels while in harbors, open water, or slight passages. These ships are small, but have amazing strength. During World War II, tugs were used to transport disabled vessels and to pilot large ships through narrow canals. Unfortunately, while assisting other ships in the fleet, men on tugs were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.

Anyone who served on a harbor tug should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
