A Haskell-class attack transport built by Kaiser Shipbuilding Company, the USS Sandoval was constructed during WWII using asbestos.
USS Sandoval (APA 194) – Navy Attack Transport
Classification: Attack Transport
Launch Date: 9/2/1944
Commission Date: 10/7/1944
Decommission Date: 3/3/1970
The USS Sandoval disembarked troops during the landings on “Red Beach” in Iwo Jima. Several of her landing craft were damaged by mortars causing several injuries to the crew. She returned later that day to take on casualties and discharge critical cargo. She took a kamikaze hit to the portside of her wheelhouse killing five men and injuring 29. At the end of the war she helped transport troops home. She received two battle stars for her service during World War II. The USS Sandoval also participated in amphibious exercises during the Korean War, earning her two battle stars, and helped train troops during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Transport ships were designed to ferry cargo between locations and to provide repair services to damaged vessels. These ships served a similar purpose as cargo ships and tankers. Unfortunately men on attack transports were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.
Anyone who served on an attack transport should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
