Mirena is an IUD (intrauterine device) used to provide birth control for women and can be effective for up to five years. Mirena IUD Side Effects And Complications
The Mirena IUD is a small, plastic T-shaped device, implanted in the women’s uterus as a form of birth control. A synthetic hormone called levonorgestrel is released in low doses. The insertion must be done by a medical professional. Unfortunately, if the device migrates it can lead to serious complications, including embedding into the uterine wall itself. Sometimes this causes perforation. A doctor would then have to surgically remove the Mirena IUD.
Serious complications arise from the migration of this IUD device, including puncturing the abdominal cavity and even internal organs such as the bladder and intestines. In fact, between November 2007 and August 2012, the FDA received more than 45,000 reports of serious adverse effects from the use of the Mirena IUD.
