What kind of in-home assistance do you need?

When you're struggling with a chronic illness that severely limits your ability to handle everyday tasks, it's time to get help.

In-home care services can help you lead a better life, despite your illness. Depending on the nature of your sickness and your symptoms, you may need daily care or just occasionally assistance -- from just one type of provider or several. There's no right or wrong way to choose in-home care services because each person's needs are unique.

Learn more about the different types of assistance available so that you can start looking for the help you need today:

Skilled nursing services

These are generally focused on managing an unstable or dangerous medical condition. You're most likely to benefit from this kind of in-home care when your condition needs expert attention but you aren't sick enough to be in the hospital.

A nurse can come to your house and help you with things like wound cleaning and bandaging, IV therapy, injectable medications and similar medical needs -- essentially anything that you might expect a nurse to do.

Home health aides

A home nurse does not, however, provide the sort of personal hygiene services that a lot of people struggle with when they are quite ill. For those, you need a health aide. These individuals have less medical training than nurses, but they are generally knowledgeable about how to best care for the sick.

If you're having trouble with bathing, dressing, combing your hair and the other essential tasks of daily living, a home health aide may be perfect for your needs.

Personal care providers

When you're sick, something as small as running to the post office or picking up groceries can become a monumental task. A personal care provider can manage these chores as well as light housekeeping and meal preparation. Often they provide companionship and emotional support to patients as well.

Unfortunately, all of these services come at a price. Medicare, Medicaid and other insurance programs are limited in what they are willing to pay. If your illness is related to your occupation, you may need to pursue litigation in order to have the money you need for these kinds of services, among other things. To understand more about your right to compensation, talk to an attorney.
