How do you cope with the wrongful death of a loved one?

No matter what the circumstances, the death of a loved one can be difficult to bear. When that death comes as a result of someone's negligence or reckless act, the grief is often compounded.

Experts on grief say that the loss of a loved one can become a catalyst for positive change in those grieving. Survivors can take on a new sense of purpose as they find ways to cope.

As you try to accept your loss, there are some strategies you can use to work through your grief.

1. Take time to care for yourself.

When you're grieving, it can be difficult to muster the energy for much else. Just the same, it's important to try to keep some of your normal routine going. Remember to get enough sleep and eat right. You need to keep yourself healthy for the people who depend on you.

2. Reach out to help others with their grief.

If other people are feeling the loss as deeply as you are, reach out and help them as much as you can. In turn, you may find your own grief a little easier to handle.

3. Don't hide from your feelings.

It's important to acknowledge your grief and your loss. It's okay to feel anger, sadness and frustration, especially when a death was sudden. Stuffing your feelings deep inside will only make it harder to process later.

4. Talk about what happened.

It's okay to talk about your loved one and talk about their death. It's actually often necessary in order to fully process the events that led to a loved one's death. That's also the best way to support others who are processing their own feelings about the event.

5. Cherish the good memories.

Find a way to honor the memory of the deceased. Whether you start a charity or simply celebrate your loved one's favorite holiday with friends, it's important to honor your relationship.

6. Consider legal action.

A wrongful death is one that could have been prevented with a little more care or caution. Often, the only way to get justice for the deceased and to make sure that the same thing doesn't happen to someone else is through a wrongful death lawsuit. Talk to an attorney about your situation and learn more about your rights.
