Asking for help caring for a loved one with mesothelioma

It often comes right along with the mesothelioma diagnosis; the sense of commitment to help a loved as they face a rare cancer that comes with a short timeline. You know it will get worse quickly, but there is a lot that is unpredictable since everyone responds to the treatment differently.

When you sign up to care for a loved one, you may sincerely have every intention of doing all that they need until the end. But what happens when you genuinely need help?

There are a lot of reasons you might need help caring for a loved with mesothelioma. Here's what to keep in mind when it is time to ask for help.

It's normal to feel guilty

While this is true no matter what your role in your loved one's life, it's especially true for a spouse. When weeks turn to months of progressive illness, it can get difficult to deal with. Especially if your loved one needs around-the-clock care.

Feelings of guilt are normal. You may feel like you should be able to handle taking care of your loved one or like you are failing if you can't. Fortunately, this is not the case. Caring for a loved one is a difficult job that requires the help of more than one person.

Consider that care facilities have multiple people who work shifts to be able to give care and support. Just like them, you also need a break now and again so that you can give better care.

Consider your resources

Needing help giving care doesn't always mean moving your loved one into a facility to receive care. Look for organizations and support groups in your area that can provide supplemental or respite care so that you can get some time away.

Also consider friends and family members who might be willing to help. They may not be able to sign up for the dedication you have given up to this point, but they may be willing to make a smaller commitment so that you are able to continue to give care.

Remember that you need support, too

You are correct that your loved one needs your support going through such a challenging time with a terminal illness. It is equally important to remember that you need support as well. Taking time to make sure that your needs are met will help you be a better caregiver for your loved one.
