April 1-7 is Global Asbestos Awareness Week

While most people are aware that asbestos exposure can be dangerous, many don't truly understand just how deadly it can be. In fact, according to the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), asbestos kills more than 190,000 people throughout the world each year. Even worse, various forms of asbestos are still legal in nearly 70 percent of the world today — including the United States.

In an effort to educate the public about the dangers of asbestos exposure, the ADAO recently announced that this year's annual Global Asbestos Awareness Week will take place April 1-7. According to a recent ADAO press release, this week is "about empowering and equipping people to protect themselves [from asbestos]." More specifically, the ADAO has announced that this year's Global Asbestos Awareness Week will concentrate on three crucial issues, which include:

  • Increasing education and awareness to prevent exposure to asbestos
  • Banning the manufacturing, mining and use of asbestos throughout the world
  • Increasing enforcement and compliance with existing asbestos-related regulations and laws

One of the most maddening facts about asbestos-related deaths — whether they are the result of mesothelioma, lung cancer or some other medical condition — is that they are 100 percent preventable. All that is required to stop these deaths is to prevent asbestos exposure in the first place. Unfortunately, though, without new laws banning this deadly material, asbestos will continue to claim the lives of countless victims.

If you or a loved one has developed a serious medical condition after being exposed to asbestos, you may have legal options available, even if your exposure occurred decades ago. However, time may be running out to file your claim, meaning you need to contact an experienced asbestos litigation attorney as soon as possible. Your future and the futures of your family members are too important not to act.
