According to criminal charges recently filed by federal prosecutors, a Denver apartment complex released asbestos from two of its towers into the air during a renovation from January to February of 2014.
As reported by FOX31 Denver/KDVR, this alleged asbestos release occurred near Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium, the home field of the Denver Broncos. Even worse, during the time period of this alleged asbestos violation, the Broncos played two playoff games at Mile High Stadium – meaning, if the federal charges are true, countless people could have been exposed to dangerous asbestos fibers.
The owner of the apartment complex is currently facing up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
Why is asbestos exposure so hazardous?
When a person inhales asbestos fibers, they can become lodged in the individual’s airways and lungs. Over time – often decades later – this person may develop mesothelioma. In fact, even though asbestos exposure isn’t the only cause of mesothelioma, it is by far the most common, with some studies having linked asbestos to as many as two out of three mesothelioma cases.
While medical options are limited when it comes to treating mesothelioma, you do still have legal options available. By asserting your legal rights, you can pursue justice – and compensation – for yourself and your family.
