Automaker announces trio of recalls

This week, a major automaker announced three separate recalls of vehicle models for disparate reasons that will ultimately affect almost a half-million autos.

Ford's announcement on Wednesday, Oct. 26, that several of its vehicles are suspected of leaking oil or fuel.

The smallest recall of the trio involves 182 Ford Super Duty 6.7-liter diesel Chassis Cab trucks, 2017 models. The problem lies with the vehicles' midship fuel tanks, which might have insufficient adhesion for the protective shield of the fuel conditioning module. There is a risk that it might get dislodged by water spraying up from the road or other debris.

That could force the drain valve open on the module, causing air to get into the fuel line or causing a significant fuel leak, the company stated. This is dangerous because it could lead to fires or slippery road conditions.

Dealerships are replacing the faulty cover with another protective shield.

The second recall is centered on approximately 8,026 Shelby GT350/R Mustangs from 2015-2017. The cars are suspected of leaking oil due to inadequate hose crimps that might allow the hose to detach and leak oil.

The automaker announced this defect could cause a sudden engine failure. Worse, if there is an ignition source, a fire could break out. It should be noted that no reports have been made of any injuries, accidents or fires from this potential hazard.

Ford dealers plan to replace the cars' engine oil tube assemblies.

The largest recall involves almost 400,000 Mercury Mariners from 2010-2011 and Ford Escapes from 2010-2011. These autos have 3.0-liter engines that might have problems with their fuel delivery systems.

The company reported module supply port might crack, causing fuel to spill. As with the other recalled autos, ignition sources could present an enhanced fire risk.

Dealers are preparing to replace the flange assemblies in the fuel delivery modules.

Defective auto parts can cause serious injuries and deaths, as we have seen in the recent past. If you were injured in a vehicle that was subject to a recall, learn about your legal rights to pursue compensation.
