Former Navy employee files asbestos lawsuit

A man who was in the U.S. Navy and who worked for a private university for several years has filed a lawsuit against more than two dozen companies who he says are responsible for his asbestos-related illness and its consequential pain, medical expenses and loss of wages. Neither the Navy nor the university are named as defendants in the lawsuit, but solely the companies that produced, imported and sold the asbestos products.

According to court documents, the man was in the Navy from 1965 through 1969, during which time he worked as a boiler technician on three separate ships. From 1972 to 2010, he worked in the private university's powerhouse, maintaining a coal-fired boiler and furnace.

While in the Navy and working at the university, the man's lawsuit alleges, he was repeatedly exposed to asbestos and products that contained asbestos. He claims that his exposure was caused by the 30 companies named in the lawsuit which mined, processed, manufactured, imported and sold the asbestos products.

The defendant companies, the man alleges, failed to provide him with protective apparel, failed to adequately warn him of the dangers of asbestos exposure, failed to adopt an asbestos safety plan, and failed to remove or recall dangerous asbestos products from his workplaces.

As such, the man was repeatedly exposed to the harmful asbestos products that caused him to contract an unspecified asbestos-related disease. Although he does not state which ailment he suffers from, he alleges that it has caused him to suffer significant pain and incur medical expenses, and has also caused him to experience a loss in wages.
